My story
Derek died suddenly at The Christie on Wednesday 8th May, just 13 days after he was taken to hospital & diagnosed with leukaemia. Whilst this was the cause of his death, diabetes was the illness that he lived with for almost 35 years. The illness that changed his life when he was 40.
Derek tested his glucose levels & injected himself with insulin 4 times a day. He bought a mobile phone earlier this year, so he could have a glucose monitor. Disappointingly his GP then denied him a glucose monitor as he was not seen as a priority. He was 74 years old & lived alone. They thought he should test his glucose levels 4 times a day with a finger prick test. Derek was determined to fight this decision. A decision that also shocked the Diabetes Team at The Christie, Manchester.
We (his children) believe that Derek would want donations in his memory to go to diabetes.org.uk so they can continue their research & help more people, like him, to have access to glucose monitors.
